The shape of a 9-team bracket
9 teams in a 16-slot bracket leave 7 byes, for seeds 1 to 7. The other 2 teams play 4 round-1 games: 8 v 9, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6. After round 1, 8 teams are left and the bracket is full from there.
If the favourites win
In a favourites-win run seed 2 comes through the losers bracket (7 games) to meet seed 1 in game 16.
| Seed | Opponents if favourites win (game) |
|---|---|
| 1 | bye, then 8 (G5), 4 (G8), 2 (G11), 2 (G16) |
| 2 | bye, then 7 (G3), 3 (G6), 1 (G11), 3 (G15), 1 (G16) |
| 3 | bye, then 6 (G4), 2 (G6), 5 (G13), 4 (G14), 2 (G15) |
| 4 | bye, then 5 (G2), 1 (G8), 6 (G12), 3 (G14) |
How many games each team plays
The fewest games a team can play is 2: two losses and out. The most is 8, for a team that loses once in the winners bracket, then wins every losers-bracket game and both grand finals.
How long it takes
16 games at 30 minutes is 8 h of court time. No round has more than 4 games, so extra courts beyond that sit idle; the replayed final is not counted.
| Courts | Clock time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 8 h |
| 2 | 5 h 30 min |
| 4 | 5 h |
