When to use it

Swiss is for many players and little time. Nobody is eliminated, everyone plays every round, and each round pairs players with similar scores.

Use the recommended number of rounds: the base-2 logarithm of the player count rounded up, and never fewer than three. Sixteen players need four rounds and thirty-two need five.

Pairings after round 1 depend on the results, so the live view makes each round’s pairings when the previous round ends.

Swiss works with an odd number of players. One player gets a bye each round and is scored as a win, and the bye goes to the lowest-ranked player who has not had one yet. Players cannot be paired twice, so the last round is where a pairing can become impossible.

Each size page below shows the rounds, how the field splits by score and what round 2 looks like.

Questions

Can two players meet twice?

No. A pairing never repeats, and with an odd number of players the bye goes to the lowest-ranked player who has not had one yet.

How are ties in the standings broken?

By score first, then by Buchholz, which is the sum of the scores of the players you faced.

How many games are in a round?

Half the players, rounded down. With an odd number of players, one player sits out each round with a bye and is scored as a win.
