Flag football rules that shape the bracket
- Typical games are two 20-minute halves with a running clock.
- Pool tiebreakers are usually head to head, then point differential (often capped), then points allowed.
- Overtime in playoffs is usually a short series of plays from the opponent's five-yard line.
Games and time for common sizes
Time per game is set at 50 minutes and 3 fields. Change either one in the games calculator.
| Field | Games | Court time | Clock time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 teams, pool play (2 pools, top 1) | 13 | 10 h 50 min | 5 h 50 min |
| 12 teams, pool play (4 pools, top 1) | 15 | 12 h 30 min | 6 h 40 min |
| 16 teams, pool play (5 pools, top 1 + 3) | 25 | 20 h 50 min | 8 h 20 min |
| 8 teams, single elimination | 7 | 5 h 50 min | 3 h 20 min |
Which format to use
Eight to 16 teams: pool play on the morning, single elimination in the afternoon.
Games with a running clock make it easy to hold 50-minute slots.
Cap point differential in pool play so lopsided games do not decide seeding.
Questions
How many games should each team get?
Three or more. Pool play gives that; single elimination does not.
