The shape of a 12-team bracket
12 teams in a 16-slot bracket leave 4 byes, for seeds 1 to 4. The other 8 teams play 4 round-1 games: 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 7 v 10 and 6 v 11. After round 1, 8 teams are left and the bracket is full from there.
If the favourites win
In a favourites-win run seed 2 comes through the losers bracket (10 games) to meet seed 1 in game 22.
| Seed | Opponents if favourites win (game) |
|---|---|
| 1 | bye, then 8 (G5), 4 (G9), 2 (G15), 2 (G22) |
| 2 | bye, then 7 (G7), 3 (G10), 1 (G15), 3 (G21), 1 (G22) |
| 3 | bye, then 6 (G8), 2 (G10), 5 (G19), 4 (G20), 2 (G21) |
| 4 | bye, then 5 (G6), 1 (G9), 6 (G18), 3 (G20) |
How many games each team plays
The fewest games a team can play is 2: two losses and out. The most is 9, for a team that loses once in the winners bracket, then wins every losers-bracket game and both grand finals.
How long it takes
22 games at 30 minutes is 11 h of court time. No round has more than 4 games, so extra courts beyond that sit idle; the replayed final is not counted.
| Courts | Clock time |
|---|---|
| 1 | 11 h |
| 2 | 6 h 30 min |
| 4 | 5 h |
